According to the National Statistical Portal of the Korea Customs Service, the online penetration rate of home appliances (online transaction amount ratio to retail sales amount) was 53.7% last year, surpassing the 50% mark among major products.
Furniture accounted for 49.7%, and books and stationery accounted for 49.3%, each approaching 50%.
The fashion and beauty sector, including shoes and bags (39.9%), cosmetics (37.4%), and clothing (31.8%), also had a relatively high online purchase rate of around 30%. Fresh and processed foods had the lowest weight at 26.2%.
Compared to 2020, when the online shopping market started to grow significantly due to COVID-19, the growth in online appliance purchases stands out.
The online penetration rate of home appliances increased from 38.2% in 2020 to 15.5% in 4 years, which was the biggest increase.
During the same period, the online penetration rate for each product category increased: food from 13.9% to 26.2% by 12.3% points, books and stationery from 44.9% to 49.3% by 4.4% points, and clothing from 29.1% to 31.8% by 2.7% points.
However, the online penetration rate of furniture in 2020 was 52.3%, exceeding half and then dropping to 49.7%.
